🐟 An Open Day Led by Our Students

Last Thursday, GENIUS Primary School opened its doors for the first time this school year. Parents toured the school, met our mascot Sharky and took home the new materials we had prepared for them. They also tried out some of the learning tools our students use in class. Our director LukÔŔ Kohoutek and deputy director Lucie SlavíkovÔ introduced the school's programme and direction.

This time, though, something was different.

Our students led the tours

For the first time, parents were shown around the school not by teachers but by students from Grades 5 and 6. We had wanted to introduce this format since our very first year, and now our students are finally old enough to take it on. It turned out they handle it with ease.

Parents got to see the school through the eyes of the people who spend every day here. Students explained where they learn, what they do at break, what the different learning tools are for and what they enjoy about GENIUS.

Why it's such great practice

Showing unfamiliar adults around your own school is a real test of skills that are hard to learn sitting at a desk.

  • Public speaking.Ā Students speak in front of adults they don't know and learn to manage their nerves. Every tour gets a little easier.

  • Communication and empathy.Ā They have to work out what parents want to know, answer unexpected questions and explain things so that someone from outside understands them.

  • Responsibility and independence.Ā They are in charge of a group of guests, the route and the timing. Nobody finishes their sentences for them or sorts it out when the group falls behind.

  • Understanding their own learning.Ā To explain what a learning tool is for or how a lesson works, you have to understand it well yourself. Explaining things to others is one of the most effective ways to learn.

  • A sense of belonging.Ā Students talk about "our school". The tour is a chance for them to notice what they like here and what they can be proud of.

ā€žWould you prefer Czech or English?ā€œ

And what made us happiest of all? At the start of one tour, one of our sixth graders asked a parent: "Would you prefer Czech or English?"

That one sentence captures everything we aim for in our English teaching. We don't want students to know English only from a textbook. We want them to use it naturally and not be afraid to speak.

Offering a guest a choice of language as casually as offering them a chair is exactly the result we work towards every day.

Come and see for yourself

Our open days continue until January enrolment. If you are considering GENIUS Primary School for your child, come and see it in person. Our students will show you around, and you are welcome to choose the language.

Upcoming dates:

  • Tuesday 24 November 2026 at 3 pm or 4 pm

  • Thursday 10 December 2026 at 3 pm or 4 pm

  • Thursday 7 January 2027 at 3 pm or 4 pm

We will show you the school, including our new lower secondary level, introduce our curriculum and answer your questions. Places are limited, so please register in advance.

We, our students and Sharky look forward to seeing you.
